Picking up the award and meeting Harper was an experience for which Gassi was not prepared. "It is overwhelming, but much appreciated and it is an honour," he said. "I must say, a lot of the teachers that I work with could also have won this award." Gassi was nominated by the parent of a student. He was hesitant to accept the nomination, but the parent insisted because of Gassi's ability to get students out of bed early for 7 a.m. band rehearsals. "I love what I do and one of the things that I try to do is let the passion for music and for music-making come through. Hopefully, it does," he said. The music program has grown steadily every year during Gassi's time at White Oaks, so much so that there are hundreds of students taking music programs and participating in the bands. Gassi said he doesn't need to convince students to come to the 7 a.m. rehearsals and tells them the recipe to success is hard work. "I said, `If you want to be successful as a band, you're going to have to come out here mornings for sectionals and full rehearsals,'" he recalled. "I love what I do and one of the things that I try to do is let the passion for music and for music-making come through." Carmen Gassi, teacher White Oaks Secondary School "I love to do it and part of that comes through and I demand that they put in the work as well if they want to be part of the program, and they do." Gassi leads the school's intermediate and senior concert bands, which meet three to four times per week. He also helps out with some other groups. White Oaks also has a Grade 9 concert band, six or seven chamber bands, a concert choir, chamber choir, two jazz ensembles and a marching band. The teacher said the program's success is a result of the support of the school's administration and principal. When he's not teaching in school, Gassi also plays with the Kindred Spirits Orchestra in Markham and the Brampton Symphony Orchestra. He also conducts the Oakville youth band High Rendition Jazz.
