25 · Thursday, November 1, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com HEAVY REPRESENTATION: Skate Oakville is sending a large contingent of skaters to sectional and invitational competitions this weekend in Barrie. Local figure skaters prep for major competitions Skate Oakville will send 27 skaters to this weekend's Skate Canada Central Ontario sectional and invitational competitions in Barrie. Skaters from the pre-novice to junior levels will compete at sectionals, hoping to qualify for the East-West Challenge event that is one level below the national championships. Pre-juvenile and juvenile skaters will compete in the invitationals, since their sectional championships aren't slated until February. In preparation for this weekend, skaters have participated in up to five regional competitions since the beginning of August. Skate Oakville sent 85 entries to those five competitions, with five of them earning medals and 21 posting top-five finishes. Kayley Monks (juvenile women under-14) won gold, Alexander Moses (pre-juvenile men U14) claimed silver and Celine DubroyMcArdle (juvenile women U14), Megan Segeren (junior ladies) and Moses earned bronze. Cracking the top five at least once were Mina Mercetic, Natasha Beaudoin, Genevieve Harris, Jaime Gabbard, Julianne Li, Anna Nemcsek, Phoenix Miller-Bush, Marie Pier Bisson, Emma Dinda, Krystal Conway and Heather Martin. Three Skate Oakville dance teams also posted top-five finishes at competitions recently. Kaitlyn Chubb and Moses (pre-juvenile), Angel Green and Malcolm Kowan (juvenile) and Nicole Novokowsky and Kaelen Dunker (novice) will all compete this weekend as well. Four other skaters who train in Oakville but represent other clubs will also compete at various sectional qualifiers this season. Outgoing CAO will remain involved Continued from page 24 any machiavellian plans to (make changes) and then be on my way. This has come a little sooner than I expected it would," he added. "I tend to be a guy who likes to go in and, I wouldn't say fix problems, but bring organizations to the next level. When they're on a firm operational platform, I'm usually looking for the next challenge." Prior to taking the CAO position at the OSC, Varian served as president and CEO of Sport BC, the independent federation for amateur sport in British Columbia. His previous experiences also include serving as an official VANOC ambassador to the Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic games and being chief executive of the Irish Hockey Association. Varian's resignation comes less than six months after the departure of another high-profile OSC employee. Former Canadian national team captain Jason de Vos resigned from his technical director responsibilities in June to focus on his broadcasting career. But Varian said he and de Vos's decisions to leave the OSC do not indicate the ship is sinking. "On the contrary, I've never seen it more afloat," he said. "It is, to be honest, completely coincidental. Jason left to go into full-time broadcasting and is doing a great job there, and I'm leaving for different reasons... There is no specific joining of the dots in relation to Jason and I choosing to leave at these times." In the release announcing Varian's resignation, the OSC stated Varian will remain involved with the club in a consulting capacity on an as-needed basis. "Paul has been instrumental in the growth of the Oakville Soccer Club," OSC president Jennifer Madill said. "The passion, energy and vision that Paul has brought to the OSC has been outstanding. We thank Paul for his contribution to OSC and look forward to maintaining a mutually beneficial relationship moving forward." The OSC will commence the recruitment of a new chief administrative officer immediately. -- Jon Kuiperij can be followed on Twitter @Beaversports FUTURE SHOP CORRECTION NOTICE NEWSPAPER RETRACTION FOR THE FUTURE SHOP OCTOBER 26 CORPORATE FLYER We would like to clarify the Fido LG Optimus L7 (WebCode: 10206957) found on page 11 of the October 26 flyer.
