Running to help kids By Nathan Howes SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER On Nov. 4, Oakville resident Wayne Westby hopes to go 42 for 42 for World Vision. The 34-year-old hopes to be running in the 42-kilometre (26-mile) New York City Marathon to find sponsorships for African children, one for each kilometre. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, New York's mayor has stated it's hoped the race will go on as normal, however the situation is being assessed by officials there. This is Westby's fourth marathon and third with Team World Vision. In 2009, he raised $3,000 for clean water projects in Africa. "Doing big city races is such a life experience. It's not just a run. It's not just a race. It's really a life experience. I'm looking forward to feeding off the energy of the crowd, having my wife there and a couple of friends," said Westby. "That will hopefully give me a little boost when I need it." Westby has tried for a few years to get into the New York City Marathon. After he was accepted, he started a campaign to find 26 child sponsors -- one for each mile of the race. "The 26 sponsors I was trying to find were all children from the same community in Mozambique -- A Hi Kulene. I went through a lot to get all these different sponsors," said Westby. "About a month ago, I got my 26th sponsor." But he didn't want to stop there -- Westby See A sign page 5 Oakville Parent-Child Centre Oakville Parent-Child Centre is a place to make friends, share ideas, and build confidence.
