In the 15 years since Ian Anderson House (IAH) opened its doors -- Ontario's first in-resident cancer hospice -- that original core philosophy has been upheld by its founder and reflected by her staff. She is the face of the hospice, the modest home on a serene property along Winston Churchill Boulevard named for her late husband Ian, where close to 1,500 people have spent their final days. Now in her 80s, she still actively fundraises, graciously and with the utmost of gratitude accepts cheques large and small from community fundraisers, and continues to fight for better care for the dying, in terms of recognition, funds and education. "It's actually 22 years since I started this. Ian died the 15th of November 22 years ago at home. I didn't know what was available and this is the problem for people who are suddenly thrust into this situation where you're looking after someone who is terminal at home, but you don't really know what's available." Her husband died just over two months after being released from hospital, which is when Anderson's quest began. She said she "wasted four years plus" trying to establish a hospice in Mississauga, where she resided at the time. "There was no government funding then for hospices. The trouble then was that people didn't know what hospices were about." Most often, hospice programs operated out of an administrative office, offering limited volunteer time and day programs. "But hospice is a noun, it's about a place, it's not about a concept of care," said Anderson, who packed up and moved to Oakville. Since 2005, the Ontario Ministry of Health has provided some nursing and personal support services to the six-bed Oakville hospice, but there's still a gap of $700,000 that must be raised annually.
