The victory gave the Crusaders their first Marshall Premier League rugby championship since 2000. Crusaders back on top once again By Jon Kuiperij BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR In the words of coach Allan Hawes, the Oakville Crusaders first men's team is finally out of the wilderness once again. The Crusaders recently won their first McCormick Cup in 12 years, capturing the Marshall Premier League rugby playoff championship with a 12-3 victory over London-St. George at Markham's Fletcher's Fields. The game was played in extremely muddy and cold conditions, making fitness and desire more of a factor than speed and skill. "You can imagine how difficult it is on your body when you're freezing, soaking wet and covered with mud," Hawes said. "If you're not fit enough to get yourself off the ground quickly, you'll start to see holes (in your defence). And, of course, you just have to want it." London-St. George booted a penalty kick in the opening few minutes to take a 3-0 lead and was pressing for more, but Oakville managed to turn its opponents away. The Crusaders eventually made their way downfield for what Hawes termed "a forwards' try", a team effort finished off by Pat Daniels. Spencer Fullerton added a convert to give Oakville a 7-3 lead at halftime. Midway through the second half, Dan West gave the Crusaders some breathing room, picking off a London-St. George pass and running 70 metres for a try. That two-score lead came in handy for Oakville in the final 15 minutes as, down by two men because of yellow and red cards, the Crusaders were under heavy pressure once again. "I'd say four or five of my players made 15-20 tackles," said Hawes, who highlighted the performances of Andrew Wilson, Ryan Morrison, Paul Burke and Fullerton. The McCormick Cup victory completed a rare double in the Marshall Premier League, when a team wins both the regular season and playoff titles. The Crusaders won 10 of their 14 league games while tying another. "One reason I came to the Crusaders was that after watching them play, I knew they had talent to win a Cup," said Hawes, who took over the team's coaching duties this season. "They just needed to be molded as a team. As we got to the latter portion of the year and the team started to jell, I had a pretty good feeling going into the playoffs that, barring misfortune, we had a really good shot of winning." Other members of the McCormick Cup champion Crusaders are Scott Delaney, Nick McKay, Filip Dobrosielski, Andrew Kay, Harry Cheung, John Harrison, Rob Finch, Mike Sutherland, James Wood, Ben Ferguson, Jeff Feeney, Steve Saunders, Jeff Brownson, Stuart Riley, Alistair Clark and Tom Rose. Chris Clark and David Walker manage the team. The Crusaders' second team also played in its league final, the Gee Gage Cup, where it dropped a 22-8 decision to regular-season champions Balmy Beach. Robert Babic was named to the Ontario University Athletics football first all-star team. The fourth-year receiver led the McMaster Marauders, the nation's No. 1 ranked team, in catches. His 51 receptions ranked third overall in the OUA and he was fifth in receiving yards with 679. Babic scored three touchdowns for the Marauders, who were a perfect 8-0 to lead the OUA this season. McMaster defeated Western 42-28 to advance to tomorrow's (Saturday's) Yates Cup in Hamilton, where the Marauders will look to defend their title against the Guelph Gryphons. McMaster can establish a Canadian university record with a victory, which would be the team's 20th in a row. Local rugby all-stars in OUA final Sunday Graham Turner of the Queen's Gaels and Mike Turnbull of the Western Mustangs earned spots on the Ontario University Athletics rugby all-star team. Turner, a third-year wing, led the OUA with nine tries in eight games and his 45 points were fourth overall in the league. Turnbull ranked seventh in scoring in the OUA with 41 points. The Oakville Trafalgar graduate booted 14 converts, had two tries and one penalty goal. Queen's and Western finished in a tie atop the OUA standings with 7-1 records. The two teams will play in the OUA championship game Sunday in Kingston. Turner scored a try on a 25-yard run in Queen's 46-3 victory over Brock in the semifinals. Turnbull had a long penalty goal and scored a try in the final minute of Western's semifinal, a 21-15 victory over Guelph.
