www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, November 22, 2012 · 18 Debating is winning sport at WOSS A White Oaks Secondary School (WOSS) debate team has won the McGill University Debate tournament. The team of Tarang Marathe and Osmaan Yusuf, both in Grade 12, won the tournament open to high schools across Canada. More than 100 teams of two competed. "Winning the McGill tournament is one of the best things the team has ever done," said teacher and White Oaks debate coach Hamish Guthrie, in an e-mail. "It's a big, national tournament that draws from all across Canada." White Oaks sent five teams to the Montreal tournament. Along with their team victory, Osmaan came in fourth place for individual speaking and Marathe came in fifth. The team of Sasha Teteruck and Sabrina Frias broke into the quarter finals to be a top-16 team. Competitors were given their topics only 15 minutes before debate. They had topics such as: "This house would use military force to cause regime change in Syria," and "This house would allow individuals to sell their organs." White Oaks is known for its strong debate program, which has a culture of winning or placing high in tournaments. This is one of the best results for the school and its best finish at the McGill tournament. The debate club has 85 students this year. "It was wonderful to show this great bunch the reward for all the hard work," Guthrie said. Now, the debate team is heading to the North American Oxford Cup in Winnipeg. WOSS WINNERS: Osmaan Yusuf, 16, left, and Tarang Marathe, 17, coached by Hamish Guthrie (front) will head to the North American Oxford Cup this weekend in Winnipeg after winning the McGill High School Debating Tournament.
