Bored in meetings with your investment adviser? Take control 19 · Thursday, November 22, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com T he subject of investing can be boring. To many investors it is extremely boring. Typically, when spouses attend meetings, they're on different pages with one more engaged than the other in the investment discussions. Similarly in the world of investing, it's usually the case that the investment adviser and the client speak entirely different languages. The investment adviser wants to talk about all of the investment strategies and investment ideas they have learned from conferences and their internal office training sessions. Jam packed with all of that important investment theory, many advisers boil down all of what they have recently learned into the next meeting they have with their clients. There is little chance that this new found investment theory is of interest to you but I presume that because you are in a meeting you have to talk about something. To illustrate how futile this is, hypothetically, we will consider what happens during a medical appointment with your doctor. Your shoulder hurts and you want to get back to playing tennis so you go and see your doctor. She listens to you explain your symptoms then prescribes a cream that should be applied to your sore shoulder twice a day for the next two weeks. She explains this will help take away the soreness and allow you to resume tennis in two weeks. That is what you want to hear and the appointment is over. Dollars & Sense By Peter Watson financially independent and therefore, able to retire and how have the last few years of investment returns affected your retirement plans? All of these topics are about your life and your ability to do the things that you want to do. As the chairperson of the meeting you should take the lead. The adviser adds their expertise by address- ing your agenda items and nothing else. The role of you setting the agenda is logical because you are the boss. You have hired an adviser to work for you. It is ultimately your responsibility to successfully achieve your financial and life goals. This is your life and you have important investment decisions to make. Be pro-active and control what is discussed during your investment meeting. Discussing your life's dreams will be far from boring and it will also be extremely constructive. If the proper language is spoken, both spouses will be actively involved in the discussion. -- Submitted by Peter Watson, MBA, CFP, R.F.P., CIM, FCSI. When you go to an investment meeting your main concern is how to prepare for retirement, pay down debt and help your children pay for a postsecondary education. That is what you want to talk about. Those financial needs reflect your values and what is most important to you and your family. Unfortunately, the language of investment is often used to talk about information that is of no use to you. This is no different from many social situations. Have you ever been stuck in a conversation with someone who just wants to talk about themselves? This may be boring for you socially the same way an investment conversation is boring when it does not address your interests and needs. There is a cure for having too much investment talk. Go into the next regular meeting with your adviser with an agenda. Pick one or more topics that are of interest to you, such as planning for retirement. Have these agenda items written down. For example, will you be able to live your desired lifestyle during retirement.
