www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, November 23, 2012 · 10 West shares wisdom that a true leader asks for help Continue from page 3 amputation of his legs below his pelvis and how he and his family refused to give up hope. He went to university and got a job, but was seeking something more, so he travelled to Kenya with a friend to help build a school. He realized he wanted to make the world a better place so he joined Free the Children. For four years, he has been sharing his story. On a Free the Children adventure two years ago, he learned the importance of asking for help. He was with a group of 25 North American students building a school when the group visited Mount Abu in Rajasthan to see a Jain temple at the top of the mountain. "We jumped out of the bus, I was really excited to show these students this temple, but in front of me was something I didn't expect. In front of me, there were over a thousand cement stairs," he said. Two local men came by with a wooden pole and platform on their shoulders and asked if anyone would want a ride to the top. "I said, `No way, guys. People are already staring at me for not having any legs and they want me to ride on this platform. I don't think so.' But I realized if I was going to lead these students to the top, I needed to swallow my pride and accept some help." Later, in the temple, there was a brass bell visitors ring three times and make a wish. West was unable to reach it so he watched. "As I stood there, I thought, `Spencer, what are you doing? You never let anything stop you before, so what's stopping you now? Why not just ask for help?'" he said. He did. "As that sound echoed through the mountains, I realized one of the most important lessons I could have taught that group of students the entire trip was that a true leader, somebody who truly wants to make a difference or create peace, knows that they need to ask for help."
