Mayor making himself at home in China By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Oakville Mayor Rob Burton announced Tuesday -- from China -- that the Town has signed a Letter of Intent with the City of Huai'an formalizing a commitment to promote and explore economic co-operation between the two communities. Burton, accompanied by the Town's Director of Economic Development Dorothy St. George, left for China Friday as part of a GTA trade mission. "Huai'an represents a very promising opportunity for the Town of Oakville," said Burton in a news release issued Tuesday. "We are establishing an economic tie, which will benefit Oakville's economy as we build overseas bridges that assist our businesses in achieving even greater economic success." The signed `Letter of Intent' speaks to promoting friendship and exploring co-operation for both communities in the fields of economy, trade, science, technology, culture, education and tourism service. The Mayor's Chief of Staff David Brennan said at this time there is no specific project the two municipalities have agreed to work on with the letter simply being a pledge to work together in the future. Oakville has received multiple delegations from China in the last year including a delegation from Huai'an, which visited the town earlier this month. During that visit, Burton and the Huai'an delegation had extensive discussions about their respective business districts and exchanged presentations about their local economies. At that time, Burton said it was important for the Town to explore and reach out to emerging economies like China. While in China, Burton and St. George are also scheduled to visit the cities of Chengdu and Tieling where similar talks will take place with local officials.
