CheerForce teams recently opened the campaign by combining for two gold, two silvers and a bronze at a meet in Cincinnati, Ohio. Teams from both of CheerForce's gyms (Oakville and Georgetown) then entered the Cheer Evolutions Fall Classic at Mississauga's Hershey Centre, with 11 squads claiming top spots in their divisions. CheerForce teams to earn gold in Mississauga included the Tiny, Mini Level 1, Mini Level 2, Youth Level 2, Junior Level 1, Junior Level 3, Senior Level 3, Senior Level 4, International Open All-Girl Level 5, Jags Junior and Jags Senior Level 4 entries. The Youth Level 2, Junior Level 2, Junior Level 4 and Senior Level 2 teams earned silver medals. Finishing just off the podium with fourth-place efforts were the Youth Jags and the Jags Senior Level 3 teams. The Youth Level 1 team was fifth in its division. Many of the Tiny and Mini athletes were making their first performances in front of a live audience. The next area competition for CheerForce teams will be this weekend's Cheer For The Cure event (in support of breast cancer awareness) at the GM Centre in Oshawa. CheerForce teams will also compete in several more meets this season, including events in Myrtle Beach, Dallas and Disney World. MOTIVATING VISITOR: Former world champion swimmer Andrew Haley visited Iroquois Ridge High School recently to speak to students at two assemblies. Haley, who overcame cancer twice as a child and had part of his right leg amputated, swam to gold at the 2000 Paralympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Now an account manager with the Toronto Blue Jays, Haley is involved with the charity Right To Play and also conducts motivational speaking visits to schools across the province. SPORTSBRIEFS Willson (U10 foil), Michael Deinhart (men's epee) and Sam Salerno (veteran foil). Kirsten Ball (women's epee) and Alexander Zhou (youth foil) also posted top-five finishes. Foster was most excited about the performances by CFA's younger athletes. "For the past number of years, we have had several competitive teen and adult members competing and finishing at the top in national and international competitions," he said. "Now, I'm proud to say, our youth program is taking off." The CFA recently added two-time Olympian and former cadet and junior world champion Joshua McGuire to its coaching staff. In other recent action, CFA members took home three gold, one silver and two bronze at the North American Cup in Virginia Beach. Eleanor Harvey led the charge with women's foil gold in Division 1 (senior) and silver in the junior event. Novice Rockets earn silver in Barrie The Oakville Hornets novice Rockets earned silver at the recent Barrie Sharkfest girls' hockey tournament. Oakville posted 4-1, 4-2, 4-3 and 2-1 victories to reach the final before dropping a 3-1 decision to the North Simcoe Capitals. Members of the Rockets squad are Abby Hennessy, Bridget Gault, Caleigh Johnston, Calleigh Wasik, Emma Ecerg, Grace Knight, Julia Lupton, Kate Prat, Katie Di Clemente, Lauren Baldin, Meghan That, Natalie Wilde, Olivia Carson, Olivia Green, Tara Courneyea and Vienna Mosler-Plata. ERIC RIEHL / OAKVILLE BEAVER / @HALTON_PHOTOG Atom red Devils earn second straight silver in Vaughan The Oakville atom red Devils got a sense of deja vu at the recent Vaughan Rangers Marshall Drewnowsky Memorial Select Hockey Tournament. For the second year in a row, the Devils advanced to the finals of the tournament, only to lose to the host Rangers select squad. Oakville was the only house league team that competed in the tournament. The Devils started the tournament by rallying from a 2-0 deficit to tie the George Bell Titans 2-2, defeated the Peterborough Petes 7-3, shot down the Parkwoods Stars 3-2 and blanked the Kingston Panthers 1-0. In the final, Oakville again overcame a late deficit to tie the game 1-1 in the final minute of regulation, only to fall 2-1 in a shootout. Members of the Devils are Duncan Cassidy, Luke Ivan, Marc Anilowski, Quin Hart, Jack Janisse, Johnny Benham, Riley Crawford, Alex Branescu, Ryan Pritchard, Mitchel Cox, Jake Blackwood, Torin Hession, Noah Oudman-Debek, Aidan Lehal and Adam Chocina. The team is coached by Jim Anilowski, Jeff Cassidy and Jimmy Blackwood. Rob Crawford is the manager/trainer, and Doug Vollans is the assistant trainer. No foiling Canadian Fencing Academy Oakville's Canadian Fencing Academy enjoyed one of its best-ever showings at the recent Brock Open in St. Catharines. CFA athletes combined to win eight medals, led by a gold-medal effort from club director of operations Kyle Foster (veteran sabre).
