www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, December 7, 2012 · 8 Letters to the editor Please make the right call, please don't drink and drive The Festive R.I.D.E. Program is upon us again this year. When are drivers ever going to get it? Impaired Driving is the No. 1 criminal cause of death in Canada. I'm extremely proud to know that police officers and M.A.D.D. Canada are committed and engaged in removing these `criminals' from our roads and highways. I retired earlier this year after 30-plus years service with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Toronto Police Service and I cannot recall the numerous R.I.D.E. initiatives I have participated in to educate and enforce against those who `choose' to drink and drive. Sadly, I cannot recall either, how many fatal crash investigations I've supervised or the number of next-of-kin notifications I've had to deliver -- all because someone made the wrong decision. This year, I won't be in uniform standing shoulder-to-shoulder with those dedicated police officers or the volunteers from M.A.D.D. Canada, but I will continue to do my part to remind those who drink that there are alternatives to getting home safely. Please report a suspected drinking driver by calling 911 and please support M.A.D.D.'s Project Red Ribbon, for all the great work they do year round to support victims of this violent crime. Ray Kulchysky Retired OPP Sergeant Oakville New hospital welcome, pollution is not Continued from page 6 citizens of Oakville agree to give the hospital the green light to exceed the emission standards of the Town? How do our representatives agree to harm the health of its citizens? I, like most residents of Halton, look forward to a new, modern hospital and I truly endorse the aim of better health for all citizens. But how much different is this medical (power plant) institution from the gas-fired power plants? I am not willing to have a health institution create unhealthy citizens.
