Blakelock students walk the line for R.I.D.E. By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF As hard as they tried, most T.A. Blakelock High School students couldn't walk the line Tuesday during a simulated roadside sobriety test held at the Rebecca Street school. The students, outfitted with Fatal Vision goggles, which show what it is like to be intoxicated, were asked to simply walk -- one foot in front of the other -- along a seven foot long white line. Some staggered and struggled at times to hold their balance while others veered completely away from the line. "It was really hard," said Hugh McLarty, 16. "I thought it was going to be a breeze. I imagine if you were behind the wheel like that it would be 10 times harder to stay on the road." Julian Wyrwa, 16, also had a difficult time walking the line with the goggles. "It wasn't like normal walking at all. I was leaning more towards one side. I couldn't keep my balance whatsoever. I expected a change, but nothing like that," he said. "I would never drive a car like that. I wouldn't even think about it." Statements like these were music to the ears of Halton police who organized the day's event as the kick-off to their holiday RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) 9 · Friday, December 7, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com PHOTOS BY MICHAEL IVANIN / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER / @halton_photog walking the line: The Halton Regional Police Service commenced this year's holiday R.I.D.E. campaign with R.I.D.E. 101 on Dec. 4 at Thomas A.
