McAlpine, Barbara Ann nee Grossman) 1934 - 2012 Barbara Ann had a lifelong appreciation of natural and historic treasures. She patiently fostered the love of learning in her family and all who encountered her during her career as a librarian in West Vancouver and Oakville. She was active in her community, particularly as long time president of the Bronte Historical Society. Her smile was ever-present, whether pouring tea for friends or negotiating with developers and politicians in efforts to preserve local heritage. Barbara Ann fought cancer three times and beat it twice. She would not go quietly, but in the early morning of December 1, she was peaceful at last. Born in Chilliwack, BC to Peter and Doris Grossman, she inherited her appreciation of art from her mother who was an accomplished painter, and her love of knowledge from her father, a highly respected professional librarian. She earned degrees from Dalhousie (BA) and McGill (Library Science) Universities. Her spirited table conversation, generous ear and unconditional love will be mourned by her children Ken (Angela), Peter (Mary) and Kathy, each of whom will strive to emulate her at the tables they occupy in the years ahead. Her sister Judy (Robert) has lost her life-long friend. A passionately devoted and adventurous grandmother, Barbara Ann will be dearly missed by Drew, Caitlin, Jeremy, Eric, Sam and Annie. They have been blessed by her curiosity and kindness. The family welcomes all to A Celebration of Her Life on Thursday, Dec. 6 at St. Paul's United Church, 454 Rebecca St., Oakville at 3:00pm. Reception to follow downstairs in Watt Hall from 4:00 - 6:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, Mom would have appreciated kind donations to her passion, the Bronte Historical Society, 7 West River Street, Oakville, Ontario L6L 6N9.
