Find holiday healthcare via feelbetterfaster.ca Continued from page 1 3 · Friday, December 21, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com OTMH alone sees approximately 55,000 visits to its emergency rooms each year. Yesterday's funding announcement also included news that Milton District Hospital will receive $999,800 and Georgetown Hospital will get $730,400. Both operate under HHS. Credit Valley Hospital will receive $2,354,900 while Trillium Health Centre, both in Mississauga, will see $1,599,300. Both are also in the Mississauga Halton LHIN. Anticipating the increased number of emergency room visits over the holidays, the Mississauga Halton LHIN took advantage of the funding announcement to officially launch its 2012/2013 Holiday Surge Protocol. This pilot project is intended to make residents aware of what healthcare services are and are not available over the holidays. The LHIN's Feel Better Faster campaign will use ads, posters, fact sheets and radio spots to make residents aware of www.felbetterfaster.ca. People can access this website to learn about healthcare options, such as walk-in clinics, pharmacies, labs and other healthcare programs, available in their area Dec. 22-Jan. 6, 2013. By visiting the website, residents can access a list of walk-in clinics and pharmacies with addresses, phone numbers and hours over the holidays. The campaign is intended to ease congestion in emergency rooms, which typically become flooded during the holidays by people assuming regular healthcare services are not open. "When 85,000 residents of our community are visiting emergency departments for illnesses and injuries that don't require emergency care, we know we have a disconnect and an opportunity to educate, because no one wants to be in emergency if they don't have to be," said Graeme Goebelle, Mississauga Halton LHIN chair. "Making sure people know all their options, what programs and services are available, where they can go if they are sick and what is open to them, is crucial." According to the Mississauga Halton LHIN, time spent in emergency has decreased 1.2 hours over the last four years -- with approximately 86 per cent of people receiving treatment within target time frames. In February 2009, Ontario set emergency length of stay targets of four hours for patients with minor conditions and eight hours for those with complex conditions. Emergency departments have seen a steady increase in complex patients, with most serious cases increasing by more than 35 per cent since April 2008, yet patients are still spending less time waiting to receive care.
