Grace crosses the line to friendship in her job By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Children give her hugs, dogs walk up to her expecting treats, parents call her great -- it's all in a day's work for Grace Wake who has been a crossing guard in the same spot for the past 10 years. The 80-year-old knows all the names of the children -- and dogs -- who pass by her at the intersection of Grosvenor Street and Grange Road just outside of Falgarwood Public School. The friendly senior knits sweaters and hats for the children -- and their dogs. She goes through two bags of bone marrow treats a week, handing them out to the animals that pass her intersection. There's even a seagull that swoops down occasionally and eats those same treats right out of her hand. Having been in the same spot for the past 10 years, she said she can go another 10. "I wouldn't move. I love the kids. Even the kids who go to high school come back and see me every now and again," Wake said. 3 · Thursday, December 27, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com "I love the kids. Even the kids who go to high school come back and see me every now and again." Grace Wake, Oakville crossing guard Wake was recognized for her work with a 10-year pin and was honoured at the Falgarwood Christmas concert last week where she received flowers. "It was beautiful and it was a terrific concert," she said. Wake immigrated to Canada from Scotland in 1957 and moved to Oakville with her husband 40 years ago. After a long career in retail management, Wake retired, but soon realized she needed something to do. "I was retired five years. I decorated the house, did the garden and got bored silly,' she said. "I thought this was voluntary. I didn't know you got paid." Wake added, even now, if being a crossing guard was voluntary, she would still do See Guard page 7 YOUR FINEST CAR W ASH & DETAILING CENTRE NIKKI WESLEY / oakville BEAVER / @halton_photog ON THE JOB: Grace Wake gets hugs from children, the attention of their pets and praise from parents.
