Town snags pair of environmental awards The Town of Oakville picked up a gold Ontario Waste Minimization Award from the Recycling Council of Ontario (RCO) in midDecember 2012 for its waste diversion efforts. The award was in recognition of the Town's successful waste-diversion programs at its facilities, which have helped employees achieve an average waste diversion rate of 70 per cent. The kudos also recognized the municipality for using innovative communication tools such as an internal website, an employee newsletter, social media and outreach programs to engage employees and residents in waste diversion. 5 · Thursday, January 3, 2013 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com "Council's vision for Oakville is to be the most livable town in Canada; reducing our ecological footprint is a vital part of achieving this goal." Oakville Mayor Rob Burton The Town's Towards Zero Waste Procedure, established in 2009, was singled out for moving operations and events towards achieving the Town's waste reduction and diversion goals. "Council's vision for Oakville is to be the most livable town in Canada; reducing our ecological footprint is a vital part of achieving this goal," said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. "We are proud to receive these awards recognizing the town's commitment to finding new and creative ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle, and we encourage all residents to do the same." The Town also recently picked up a Milestone 2 Achievement award from Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI). That award recognized the progress the Town has made in developing a comprehen- sive, risk-based plan to address the anticipated effects of climate change. The Town of Oakville is one of 12 municipalities working with ICLEI to create a corporate Climate Change Adaption Plan. Town staff is moving through a five milestone process that provides a standardized approach to guide municipalities in developing the plan.
