PM adds his mother's photo to Nonna Wall Continued from page 1 3 · Wednesday, January 9, 2013 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Oakville concerning the renewal of the Automotive Innovation Fund (AIF). No, it was about Little Brother Dylan, 13 years old and the proud graduate of Oakville's grassroots program Kids Culinary Community (KCC). This was what the Prime Minister had come to learn about firsthand from its bubbly founder Julia Hanna. Away from the prying eyes of the national media, Harper joined Oakville MP Terence Young, Halton MP Lisa Raitt and Burlington MP Mike Wallace for a private lunch at Ritorno Restaurant on Oak Walk Drive. It was there, Hanna, chair of the Oakville Chamber of Commerce and owner of the popular eatery, welcomed Harper and the MPs and shared with them her belief that eating well and eating together are important life choices. The restaurateur is known for her quest to engage youths in making healthy food decisions and KCC teaches them how to prepare a meal. She stresses the importance of family and friends spending quality time over a homecooked dinner. She wants children to know tomatoes don't magically appear from cans and jars, but rather well-tended vegetable gardens. To that end, she makes sure KCC students reap the harvest they sow in a plot of donated land on the northeast corner of Neyagawa RIZIERO VERTOLLI / OAKVILLE BEAVER / @halton_photog RIGHT AT HOME: From left to right, Big Brother Tyler Shane, Little Brother Dylan, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and Ritorno owner Julia Hanna. Harper visited the local restaurant to have lunch and learn about the Oakville-based Kids Culinary Community (KCC). Boulevard and Dundas Street. Hanna, recognized last year with a Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal, said she was honoured to have the PM as her lunch guest and even more proud that he and Young had agreed to participate in the restaurant's special and highly-visual `Nonna Wall.' This wall is a deep source of pride for Hanna as it bears more than 300 framed photographs of all the mothers and grandmothers of friends and relatives who made an impact through their culinary skills. The Prime Minister placed a photograph of his mother, Margaret, on the restaurant wall while Young hung a family photo. It was a moving moment, especially for Hanna who says she would love to see KCC and its philosophy go nationwide. Dylan, who was photographed with Harper, described his encounter with the PM as "really cool and exciting." The teen enjoyed the KCC program so much that he participated in it twice and now happily makes his own fresh pasta and cooks a mean veal parmesan for his mom. Wearing a white apron, and red baseball cap, Dylan was kept busy in the kitchen washing dishes. His sense of pride was evident when he talked about graduating from KCC. His Big Brother, Tyler Shane, was also on hand for Dylan's meeting with Harper, noting KCC has afforded his Little Brother a variety of opportunities. "He understands the value of a good meal," Shane said of Dylan. "He appreciates food." In a brief meet-and-greet with The Oakville Beaver, Harper admitted his own family dinners are not held as often as they should be. When asked about his own culinary skills, the Prime Minister smiled and acknowledged he is not the best of chefs, but he did note his daughter has taken a strong interest in cooking. The PM willingly posed for photographs with restaurant staff and surprised diners who didn't expect to see Harper sitting down for lunch on the cold Friday afternoon.
