Flu striking early -- and hard By Julia Le METROLAND WEST MEDIA GROUP Communities across Ontario, including Halton, are experiencing a spike in flu cases. Public Health Ontario's recent flu report indicates a rise, particularly in an influenza A strain, with confirmed cases of H3N2 rising to 927 since September. From Dec. 16-29 of last year, there were 105 confirmed cases. Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) officials say hospitals in Oakville, Milton and Georgetown are seeing a higher number of flu patients in its emergency departments. "The trend at our hospitals and most southern Ontario hospitals reflect what the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care has been telling us. The number of patients suspected and confirmed are higher than the last few years," said Dr. Thomas Warren, who is an infectious diseases specialist and Antimicrobial Stewardship Program lead at HHS. A total of 392 hospitalizations and 31 deaths have been reported among lab-confirmed influenza cases according to recent stats released by Public Health Ontario. The majority of hospitalizations and all deaths occurred in influenza A cases. Halton Region's Associate Medical Officer of Health Dr. Monir Taha says it's a busier, and earlier, flu season. "Normally, things don't get going until January and February," he said, adding the season is the worst compared to the last five years with the exception of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic year. Taha said the influenza A strain called H3N2 currently going around is more hard-hitting than other types. It's the kind that magnifies symptoms, leaving you weak and extremely tired with a high fever, body aches and a cough a few days later.
