Former Oakville resident charged with fraud By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF A former Oakville resident is facing numerous fraud-related charges after several residents were allegedly talked into investing in African orphans charities that did not exist. Halton police service's Fraud Unit began an investigation in early December after receiving complaints from three Oakville residents. Police said a man approached the residents and told them he represented the charity groups `Bedrock Foundation' and `G.R.I.D' (Global Relief and International Development). Police allege the residents were told the U.S. government was to donate millions of dollars to the charities, but the funds were being held in a New York-based account and various fees and expensive documents were needed to release the money. Police say the Oakville residents were then invited to invest money to secure the release of these funds under the promise they would receive a 10-fold return once the cash was secured. Police allege the money provided by the residents was redirected for a non-charitable use. Investigators say they found no evidence the charities actually existed. "It is a very well-known type of fraud that continues to be one of the most common types of mail frauds out there," said Det. Const. Keith Nakahara. Charged with three counts of fraud and six counts of possessing forged documents is Carman Douglas Lynn. Lynn, 64, was arrested Friday, Jan. 18 -- he is currently living with relatives in Halton Hills. Police are still attempting to determine exactly how much money was lost. Anyone who has information related to this case is asked to contact the fraud unit at 905-465-8739. Lynn is scheduled for a first appearance hearing at Milton Provincial Court on March 5. Humane society spokesperson Brenda Dushko said the kittens were dropped off in a large cardboard box at some point Monday evening/Tuesday morning while the shelter was closed. An OMHS animal care attendant discovered the kittens when she arrived at the shelter Tuesday at 7 a.m. "Inside were two very cold kittens approximately five months old, one with an injured hind leg," said Dushko. "She (attendant) took off her own coat and covered the kittens, rushing them inside the shelter." It is unknown how long the kittens had been left outside where temperatures had plunged to as low as -14 C. The kittens are unneutered males, one a medium-haired gray tabby, the other a long-haired brown tabby with PHOTOS COURTESY of OAKVILLE & MILTON HUMANE SOCIETY Lunch Menu Menu Appetizer Lobster Bisque Bisque Lobster Garnished with with Crab Crab Garnished Tu Casa Casa Salad Salad Tu Mixed Greens, with Cherry Tomatoes, Julienne Bell Peppers and Cucumber with Light Champagne Dressing www.tucasafinedining.com Dinner Menu Appetizers Lobster Bisque Garnished with Crab Lobster Bisque Garnished with Crab Caesar Salad Caesar Salad Tu Casa's extraordinary Homemade Caesar Dressing, without Tu Casa's extraordinary Homemadeavailable Caesar Dressing, without Anchovies Anchovies (Anchovies on request) (Anchovies available on request) Main Courses Main Courses Chicken Fettuccine Chicken Fettuccine Mushrooms, Rapini and Tomato Sauce Mushrooms, Rapini and Tomato Sauce Salmon Amandine Salmon Amandine With Sundried Tomato and Pesto Risotto, and Fresh Vegetables With Sundried Tomato and Pesto Risotto, and Fresh Vegetables Pork Tenderloin Pork Tenderloin Medallions with Mushroom Cream Sauce, Roast Potatoes and Fresh Medallions with Mushroom Cream Sauce, Roast Potatoes and Fresh Vegetables Vegetables Desserts Desserts Chocolate and Banana Bread Pudding Chocolate and Banana Bread Pudding courses $29.95 Taxes & gratuities not included 33 courses $29.95 Taxes & gratuities not included white markings. Both kittens were immediately taken to a local veterinary clinic for examination and treatment. Dushko said the vet would probably examine the extremities of the kittens to make sure there is no lasting damage from the cold. She pointed out that dumping a pet, even in front of an animal shelter, is illegal and punishable by law. She also said dumping the kittens in front of the shelter while it was closed was unnecessary. "We would have instantly taken those kittens in if the people had contacted us." This incident comes just one week after an Oakville woman found two Persian cats abandoned along Indian Ridge Trail. Dushko would like to remind residents just because a cat has fur doesn't mean it can't die from exposure to extreme cold. The cardboard box in which the kittens were found had contained an American Standard toilet. Anyone with information is asked to contact the society's Animal Protective Services Department at 905-845-1551, ext. 12. All information is kept confidential.
