GRAHAM PAINE / OAKVILLE BEAVER / @halton_photog Widow sees her life on TAB stage By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Vi Connolly was brought to tears watching T.A. Blakelock High School's Grade 10 drama students recount the Second World War story of her late husband, Bill Connolly. The students presented The Two Bills, which they wrote, directed and produced, at the Rebecca Street high school, Wednesday. The play is a docu-drama about two men named Bill from Hamilton -- Bill Connolly and Bill Stewart -- who were shipmates on personal connection: Vi Connolly, left, with Grade 10 student Michelle Fernandes, who portrays Vi in the T.A. Blakelock High School Grade 10 drama class production of The Two Bills. The interpretive piece focuses on the Battle of the Atlantic and the sinking of the HMCS Athabaskan. Connolly is the widow of Bill Connolly -- one of the two Bills. the HMCS Athabaskan, which was sunk in the English Channel on April 29, 1944. Stewart was killed. Connolly survived and was captured and held in a German prisonerof-war camp. He eventually returned home to his wife, Vi. "I had a good cry," said Vi, a Burlington resident, after the production. "It was very real. These kids did the greatest job, without knowing him. They put so much emphasis on it. It was just great. I enjoyed them more than anything." See Blakelock page 11 And now they're ready for the next step. They took their first whirl around the dance floor in 1948 and have been kicking up their heels ever since.
