One donor can save up to eight lives with organs Continued from page 3 9 · Thursday, January 24, 2013 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com donor can save up to eight lives with organs and enhance up to 75 lives with tissue. As of September of last year, 2,551,994 Ontario residents are registered as organ donors, with 44,650 of those being from Oakville, according to a TGLN spokesperson. Taylor, who has since joined the Oakville Be a Donor awareness campaign, says some people think they are registered because they have a signed donor card, but that's not the case. "They need to flip the back of their green health card. If it doesn't say donor and they want to be one, they need to register electronically and, most importantly, have a conversation about it with their family," she said. Taylor noted joining the campaign has not only helped spread awareness of the need of organ donors, but it has also helped her deal with the frustrations of seeing her husband on the transplant waiting list. She also started a blog called Taking a deep breath in July 2012, detailing her family's journey as they "navigate through the transplant system," as another way to cope through the stress and raise awareness. "We've had emotional support from everyone we know and loads of people I don't know through social media. I'm very active on Twitter, as another way to get the word out, and have a decent following on there," Taylor said. Her Twitter account (@LHmaintenance) has close to 3,000 followers. People can also follow Childerhose's journey on Twitter with the hashtag #forKEITH2breathe, and most recently on a Facebook page Taylor has set up -- the page can be found by searching Lungs For Keith To Breathe. "All the support has been overwhelming," said Taylor. "I get the support from the outside world and then I transfer that to him."
