BULLOCK Mrs. Nora Bullock and family came to Canada in 1910 to the farm of Henry Newell at Carlisle. There were three sons, Theo, Eric and Reg, and a daughter Annie. Mrs. Bullock could see no future at that time in Carlisle, and moved into Waterdown. At that time they were building the railroad through Waterdown. Part of the income was made by taking care of the high school, which included the lighting of thirty box stoves each morning. Mrs. Bullock used to take the stage coach to Hamilton to T. H. Pratt Department Store, and buy bolts of flannel, making it into shirts which she sold to the railroad workers for $1.50 each. In 1912 the family moved to the farm of John H. Howard for a short time, and then to the farm of Otto Schone in Aldershot. The family worked on the farm, and Mrs. Bullock stood on the Hamilton market selling on a commission basis for Mr. Schone. The market at that time was from 7am to 10pm six days a week. Mrs. Bullock took a room, and would stay on all week as the loads were brought in by horse and wagon. In 1918 Lt. Reg. Bullock was killed in action overseas. The same year the family purchased the farm of W. A. Emery, (21 acres) which now faces East Plains United Church on Plains Rd. East, and extended down to the Burlington Golf Course. The business was operated as N. Bullock and Son, assisted by daughter Annie. In 1920-21 E. E. Bullock married Elsie Smith, and then left to go into business for himself. In 1928 Theo Bullock married Nellie Evans, a Hamilton girl. In following years they raised six children, three boys and three girls. Reginald, June, Theo Jr., Nora, Henry and Peggy. As years passed they built a range of greenhouses and extended into the florist business. With the coming of World War II, and with the scarcity of labour, and lack of plant stock from Europe, the family dropped the flower end of the business, continuing in the market gardening end of the business. In 1944 daughter Annie married R. H. Howard of Dundas, and settled in a house on the farm, but continued working in the business. At about this same time Nora Bullock bought thirteen acres across the road from the present farm from the late Dr. Riddell of Toronto. In 1948 they sold the 21 acres bought from Wm. [William] Emery to Jos. [Joseph] Veri of Stoney Creek and moved across the road to the Riddell property. In that same year they built a fruit market on the highway frontage. In 1950 June Bullock married Ronald Paterson of Hamilton a builder and now resides in Stoney Creek. In 1954 Theo Bullock Jr. married Jacquiline Hayworth of Hamilton. He continued in the business for a short while, then left to go into the drafting business. In 1955 Peggy Bullock married Robert Thomas of Burlington, a tinsmith, and now resides in Aldershot. In 1954 Nora Bullock died, and the business passed on to Theo Bullock, and operated as T. Bullock & Sons. In 1954 the major portion of the farm was sold. The fruit market, house and buildings were kept with approximately two acres of land. In 1959 Theo Bullock retired, and sons Reginald and Henry bought the business from him. The business is now
