The Whyte Family - Archibald Whyte was born in Ireland, emigrating to Canada and settled in Hamilton. His son, Edwin (better known as Eddie) was born in Hamilton in 1870. Eddie started working with the Hendries as a stable boy at the old Hendrie farm. Later, he trained race horses for the Hendries for about twenty-five years. He was considered to be one of the best trainers in the North American Continent. His success as a trainer was well known, having won many of the more important races on the continent. Included in his winning races were the "Futurity" "Freakness" [Preakness?] and the "King's Plate" with the famous Hendrie horse "Martimas. Edwin Whyte lived most of his life in Aldershot. In the picture opposite, he is seen relaxing on the verandah of his home on Unsworth Road; this house is now occupied by Mrs. Greene. Later he moved to the corner of Unsworth Road and North Shore Boulevard, where his widow still resides. Edwin Whyte passed away in 1936. Photo: Picture taken Sunday, May 12th, 1919.
