Schoan Family History In the early 1800's, the Schojan family lived in Potsdam, Germany. There were two daughters, Roselia, who married a Bishop of the Lutheran church, and Henriette, Mrs. Korner; both of these women lived their whole lives in Germany. There were four sons, Karl who was with the German merchant marine between Germany and New York; Albert, who was a florist with greenhouses in Penn Yan, N.Y.; Frederick, who was a soldier in the U.S. Civil war was killed in action; and William, the eldest, who was a graduate of the University of Berlin. William Schojan emigrated from Germany to Canada in 1861. He brought with him his bride of a few months Ottilia Slater. They came directly to Waterdown where Mrs. Schojan had relatives. There, their first child was born, Otto William Schojan. They left Canada to go to New York state, living in Poughkeepsie and Rochester. Three sons and a daughter were born to them there, John, William, Frederick and Louise. John and William died when young men; Frederick, although a victim of meningitis when an infant lived unable to walk, to the age of 64. They had two children - Mildred Jarvis, Director of Public Health Unit at Port Arthur; and Charles of Wooler, Ont., who married Anne Filman and has four daughters, all of Burlington - Hazel, Mrs. Theron Blair, has one son Donald at present in Germany. Edith, Mrs. Victor Smith, has two daughters, Beverly and Mary Jane. Mary, Mrs. Jack Cope, has three sons, William, Gary and Robert, and four daughters, Wendy, Jacqueline, Mary Ann and Patricia. Otto Schojan who changed the name to Schoan for ease of pronunciation, married Mary Elizabeth Rasberry in 1890. He bought 20 acres of land at Aldershot, part of Lot 8, B.F. [Broken Front] Concession, East Flamboro, from the Fuller Estate at the same time Mr. Townsend acquired the rest of that land. This was a large acreage which changed hands many times, in whole and in part.
