The Sovereign Family Three brothers named Sovereign emigrated to America about the middle of the eighteenth century. Two died single, the third married Mary Lawrence in New Jersey and raised a large family of nine sons and four daughters. When the war of the Revolution broke out, most of the family upheld the loyalist cause and moved to Canada. From this group came Daniel Freeman Sovereign who settled on Crown land where Gordon Sovereign now lives. He came to this district at the time Hamilton consisted of a blacksmith shop and a store. David Sovereign, his grandson lives just back of the cloverleaf. "Those were the days when they had no use for jails; a man would be hanged for stealing a sheep" David Sovereign was told by his grandfather. Dave Sovereign remembers the time he used to team wood to Burlington and you could buy coal for $5.50 a ton. Times have changed and now the Sovereigns have the world brought into their home through television. A son, Earl is also a well-known resident. Mrs. Sovereign is taking up painting as a hobby. Clipping of photo: WELL-KNOWN FAMILY - Mr. and Mrs. David Sovereign were snapped with their daughter, Miss Leota Sovereign, and their small granddaughter, Evelyn. The original Sovereign farm is Crown land.
