Lake named after late G. Sovereign - Burlington Gazette, March 22nd, 1962 The name of an old Burlington family will soon become well known to residents and vacationers in the Parry Sound area. Earl Sovereign, market gardener and Burlington school board trustee, heard last week that a lake would be named for his brother, the late Lieut. [Lieutenant] George Burt Sovereign, who was killed in action in Belgium in 1944. A letter, from the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, announcing the news, said the honor was in recognition of the services of Lieut. Sovereign. In 1942, Lieut. Sovereign enlisted with the Lorne Scots reserve army, proceeding later that year to Gordon Head, B.C. where he took officer's training and received his commission. In February, 1944, he embarked for England and became attached to the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada before going to France. He was killed in action near Antwerp, leading not only his own platoon but the whole company. Before enlisting, Lieut. Sovereign lived with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. David F. Sovereign. He was educated at Maple Avenue School and Burlington High School and was an active member of East Plains United Church, assisting with the Sunday School, and young people's activities. Sovereign Lake, as it is now called, is about six miles south of Parry Sound. Said Earl Sovereign on hearing the news: "This is a complete surprise to all of us. We have had no previous correspondence with the Department and we did not make any request for this honor." Surviving Lieut. Sovereign are three sisters, Miss Leota M. Sovereign, Burlington, Mrs. C. Speck, Milton, and Mrs. F. Young, Toronto. Clipping of photo: Thursday, September 12, 1957. No lifting or tugging here. With the new ramp and floating docks built by members of the Aldershot Boat Club trailers are backed into the water and the boats are afloat in a matter of minutes. David Sovereign lends a hand at getting the family's boat into the Bay, while on the dock his younger brother, Richard, and sister, Evelyn, wait. Ready and eager to hop in and set out on the water.
