The Wyatt Family Henry Wyatt and his wife, Emma purchased land in 1845 from Dennis L. Dennis. They were of a fine old English family, highly cultured and musical. Miss Helen Wyatt presided at the organ at St. Matthew's Church, while Misses Grace, Flora, Mrs. Thomas Marsh and Mrs. Beard with their brothers, George, Charles, Percy and Frank made the nucleus of a fine choir. In 1869 Henry Wyatt left "Herberton" for England, in October, but returned in 1870 or 1871. Mr. Wyatt died shortly afterwards in 1871 and was buried in St. Matthew's Cemetery. Mrs. Wyatt did the book-keeping for St. Matthew's Church for ten years. She outlived her husband by only a few years. In 1884, a gift of money was sent from a daughter, Catharine, who was living in England and a font was bought and donated to St. Matthew's. Part of their farm was given as a site for St. Matthew's Church and the rest was later sold to John F. Read, a retired sea Captain, who had sailed the Southern Seas.
