Clipping and Photo of Mrs. H. Stevenson, Historical Convenor By Andrea McDade Margaret Stevenson is a woman constantly surrounded by people and she loves it. Her sunny attitude and her eager willingness to participate in numerous activities make Mrs. Stevenson a pleasant, interesting person to be with, especially, when she starts to reminisce about the long-gone days in Aldershot. For 34 years, Mrs. Stevenson has lived in Aldershot and for all of those 34 years, she has been keenly aware of her surroundings. Five years ago, Mrs. Stevenson and a group of women, known then as the Aldershot Women's Institute, began to compile a book entitled. "Tweedmuir History of Aldershot". The massive undertaking was instigated, due to a suggestion of Lady Tweedsmuir's, wife of Governor-General Lord Tweedsmuir. The women became so engrossed in their project, they decided they did not have enough time to do a good job, on both the institute and the history so, they asked permission to be disbanded and to continue solely with the history of their community. Permission was granted by the women's institute, and the Aldershot ladies now refer to themselves as the Tweedsmuir History Group. Once a month, the members meet at Mrs. Stevenson's home, the president of the group, at 965 Shadeland Avenue. Her dining room, where all the research, the writing and organizing is done, could easily be labelled, "history on a plate rail." The entire room is circled with precious plates that Mrs. Stevenson has collected over the years, antiques that she loves dearly because of their background and their beauty. After much prompting, Mrs. Stevenson, a sweet, modest woman, admitted that she personally works on the "Tweedsuir History Book" every day and this is in addition to her other activities, so diversified they would tire a woman half her age. Keen Bowler Mrs. Stevenson is an original member of the Aldershot Lawn Bowling Club and bowls all summer long. In the winter, she enjoys carpet bowling at Melrose United Church. She belongs to the Holy Rosary Catholic Women's League and to Mrs. Stevenson gardening is a joy. Her rooms are bright with African violets. Needlework also consumes a great deal of her time. Mrs. Stevenson has one daughter Marion, now Mrs. J. D. Sherriff, and two grandchildren, a boy and a girl. The Tweedsmuir History Group members hope to have their book completed by January of next year. They have been asked to present the book to the Royal Botanical Gardens in the spring, where it will be placed in the library, making it available to interested persons. Margaret Stevenson is a woman who spends a great deal of her time concentrating on the past but, she never lets it interfere with her busy thoughts of the future. We wish her luck with this year's efforts and next.
