He has been a resident of Ajijic on Lake Chapala with his wife Lois Anne since 1988. Born on the Rockaway seashore of New York on October 19, 1928 from Croatian-Slovak roots, Vlahov began his violin studies at the age of nine under famed violin virtuoso Adam Kuryllo. At Far Rockaway High School, he became the first freshman violinist to ever be accepted into the prestigious 'New York City High School Orchestra'. At CCNY, the City College of New York, he became an active orchestra member while joining other major orchestras in the New York City Metropolitan area and performing in solo concerts. At Howard University in Washington D.C. where he received his degree in Pharmacy and top scholastic honors, he performed quartet work with members of the distinguished 'School of Music'. After earning a 'Master's degree at Rutgers University, he immigrated to Canada in 1969 where he reunited with his sister Ilene. There, he met and married Lois Anne Greene and joined the 'Shoppers Drug Mart' retail drug chain as an Associate, owning and operating two supermarket drugstores (Trafalgars Village & Oakville Place) in Oakville, Ontario. In Canada, he began writing short stories under the encouragement of Ed Parker, noted Canadian journalist and brother-in-law. This ballooned out into writing stage plays, Canadian TV dramas and short stories for Canadian magazines. On retirement in Mexico, he tackled novels, producing six and a book of short stories. Ed is preceded in death by his parents, John Vlahov, Susie (Mikulas) and older brother Bill, a D.C. Dental Surgeon. Ed Vlahov leaves behind his beloved Lois Anne, his sister Ilene, a brother-in law, Lorne Cryderman, sister-in-law Renee Bruce, Rod Bruce and nieces Tia Kingston, Ara Parker, Nancy Schickner, Carol Vlahov, Erin Bruce-Halstead, Cynthia Bruce-Barrett and nephews Ivor Parker, Dr. Eric Vlahov, Tampa University Professor and Dr. David Vlahov, former Director of the New York Academy of Medicine and presently Dean of Nursing in San Francisco, chosen Mexican family Jorge, Sonia, Natalie, Georgi & Danny Ulloa and his many lakeside friends. His legacy to those who knew and loved him is the memory of his good humor, his funny stories and his giving heart which he has encased only partially in his writings. His wishes were no memorial or service. Just remember "Eddy" when you have your next 'te hilado'. Donations can be made in Edward Vlahov's name to Mariposa Project by going to www.gomariposa.org.
