Woman in hospital after Speers Rd. apartment blaze By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF An Oakville woman was taken to hospital in critical condition following an apartment fire, which broke out at 30 Speers Rd. last week. The Oakville Fire Department was alerted to the fire by the building's alarm system at about 11 p.m. Friday, at which point seven vehicles were sent to the scene. After entering the apartment building, firefighters found thick black smoke in the hallway of the seventh floor and soon determined it was coming from a particular suite. They entered the apartment and discovered an unconscious woman, described as being in her early 30s, in the bedroom -- she was originally described as an elderly woman. The woman was taken out of the apartment and rushed to Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital in critical condition from smoke inhalation. "She was pretty bad," said Oakville Fire Prevention Officer Michael Harrison. "We are hoping we can see her today or tomorrow." Upon searching the apartment, firefighters discovered a smoldering fire on the living room couch, which was quickly extinguished. While no one else was harmed in the fire, its cause is yet to be determined -- however, the Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating. During the fire, smoke spread throughout the building as low as the sixth floor and as high as the 15th floor. As a result, the building was evacuated with the Oakville Fire Department arranging for a heated Oakville Transit bus to be on scene to keep residents warm during the cold winter night. Despite the lack of fire damage, smoke damage to the apartment is estimated at $20,000$30,000. Harrison is reminding residents to make sure the smoke detectors in their homes or apartments are functional as having that early warning could mean the difference between life and death. He also recommended residents do a sweep of their homes before going to sleep each night to ensure candles are blown out and stoves, portable heating devices and other items that require supervision are turned off. 9 · Wednesday, February 6, 2013 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com INCOME TAX PLANNING FOR SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS TEN YEARS IN A ROW National Sweater Day tomorrow Oakville Hydro is encouraging residents to turn their heat down by two degrees tomorrow (Thursday) for National Sweater Day -- a World Wildlife Fund (WWF) campaign developed as a way for people to show their support against climate change.
