Flynn not in Cabinet, but pleased with PA post By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn says new Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has brought in fresh faces along with seasoned veterans into her cabinet -- sworn in Monday. In the shuffle, Flynn was named Parliamentary Assistant (PA) to the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. In this capacity, Flynn will continue to work with MPP Glen Murray, previously the minister of training, colleges and universities. "I think Kathleen has done a very good job of bringing in a blend of people with experience and people who are getting their first chance in cabinet from various areas around the province," Flynn said. Choosing a cabinet is tough as it requires representation from various parts of the province and needs to reflect the variety of residents, said the MPP. "You have to have a cabinet that looks like Ontario as much as possible," Flynn noted. The new cabinet has 27 members, 10 of whom are new members. Twenty ministries are now headed by a new minister. Charles Sousa of Mississauga is the new finance minster while Toronto's Eric Hoskins is minister of economic development, trade and employment. Liz Sandals heads up the education portfolio while Deb Matthews continues in her role as minister of health and long-term care, while also becoming deputy premier. Flynn said the new cabinet includes people from a variety of backgrounds who will be able to work together at a time when Queen's Park needs co-operation. He said the government is losing some of its "firebrand" members, such as outgoing Finance Minster Dwight Duncan, and Cabinet Chair Rick Bartolucci, who retired. "They were a different type of politician. They were all about the combative nature, the adversarial nature of politics," Flynn said. "Some of the people Kathleen has put in Cabinet bring a different approach to politics, which is probably what the House needs the 18 years I've spent on (Town) council, I know how much transportation and infrastructure means to the people of Ontario. It's good to be in one of the priority ministries doing work that's absolutely essential to be done," he said. "I'm hoping we can work with our municipal partners, our federal partners and we can get this job done for the people of Oakville and Ontario." Flynn said there has been much fighting between the parties, which resulted in only one bill being passed by the current government before it was prorogued. However, Flynn expects that to change when Legislature returns to session on Tuesday, Feb. 19. "I think the people Kathleen has picked for cabinet are the type of people that are more cooperative in nature." Flynn said he's glad to be moved to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transportation, both of which are huge issues for Oakville. "Because of my background, He said the No. 1 issue for the Greater Toronto Area, for all levels of government, is tackling the issue of gridlock. He said the ministry will work on improving highways and transit systems, both of which need to be improved to fix gridlock. The ministry will continue to make improvements for GO Transit, such as adding all-day service, increasing service to 15 minutes during peak periods and ensuring there is parking at GO stations. Flynn also wants to improve transit with the addition of buses that run on natural gas, which he said brings operational cost savings, as natural gas is cheaper than diesel, and also environmental benefits, as they pollute less and produce no Fine Particulate Matter 2.5. Such buses are already in use around the world, he said.
