Titans still alive for OFSAA despite loss in final One of the few accomplishments the Assumption Crusaders didn't achieve last year on the way to winning the all-Ontario AAA senior girls' volleyball championship was taking the Halton title. Yesterday (Tuesday) at Sheridan College, the Crusaders took care of that, beating the Holy Trinity Titans in straight sets -- 25-17, 25-23. The winning point was scored the way one might expect, with team leader and Marquette Universitybound Autumn Bailey pounding a spike against a defenceless Titan team. Bailey, and cousin Carleigh Bailey, the co-captains, led the Crusaders, who were upset by Notre Dame in last year's Halton AAA final. Assumption, of course, went on to qualify for OFSAA and defeat Waterdown for the provincial crown. For the Titans, it was the same story as last year, losing the Halton final, at that time a AAAA battle with Loyola. "We lost here, won GHAC and went on to reach quarter-finals at OFSAA," said co-coach Vesna Brnadic. The Titans' season isn't over just yet. As an AAAA team, Holy Trinity will play a Hamilton Catholic representative on Monday for the right to represent the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference at the OFSAA tournament March 4-6 in Mississauga. Yesterday's first set was tied at 10-10 when the Baileys went to work. Carleigh served up four points, three of them driven home on spikes by Autumn to make it 16-11. Autumn stretched an 18-14 lead to 22-14 with her bullet serves, three of them aces. Maria White then finished off the Titans with an unreturnable serve in the 25-17 decision. Holy Trinity regrouped to offer the Crusaders a tougher second set, staying even at 21-21, even leading 9-4 at one point thanks to effective serving by Julia Kaczorowska, who rattled off five straight wins. "They came out in the first set a little bit nervous but came out huge in the second with minimal errors," said Dan Russell, the Titans' other co-coach. "They were absolutely outstanding, from serving, passing, hitting... there was nothing we could be disappointed with. It was all we could ask of the team to stay calm, especially with the big Assumption crowd here."
