New area code to be introduced in March By John Bkila OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Oakville is getting a new area code starting next month along with the rest of the 905/289 area. As of March 25, a new 365 area code will be introduced to the region of southern Ontario that includes Ajax-Pickering, Brampton, Burlington, Hamilton, Markham, Milton, Mississauga, Oakville, Oshawa, Richmond Hill, St. Catharines and Whitby. Increasing demand for telephone numbers, particularly for wireless devices, has created the need for additional numbers to serve residents in the affected areas, according to The Telecommunications Alliance -- comprised of telephone companies Bell, Rogers, Telus and Vidéotron, the alliance was formed to create awareness about the introduction of new area codes. "These new area codes reflect the growing use of cellphones and other mobile devices. Telecommunications service providers will be able to accommodate the growing demand for new telephone numbers with absolutely no impact on customers," said Glenn Pilley, director of the Canadian Numbering Administrator. "We expect the first numbers with the new area codes to be assigned over the coming months as part of a seamless transition process." The new 365 area code will coexist with the current 905/289 and will come into effect as new telephone numbers are introduced, while numbers with the current area codes will continue to be assigned for the next few months until there are none remaining. In Toronto, which traditionally has had 416/647 area codes, a new 437 area code will also 3 · Wednesday, February 20, 2013 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com be introduced. New area codes will also be brought in over the next few months in several other regions throughout Canada, including Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. The introduction of a new area code in a region does not affect the local calling areas or the way local or long-distance calls are dialed. Special numbers, such as 911 and 311, will still be dialed using only three digits. For more information, visit www. newareacodes.ca. Want to keep doing what you love?
