Finalists speak at Liberal gala Canada's first astronaut Marc Garneau will be speaking about engaging Canada's Youth at the upcoming Halton Federal Liberal Association's Gala Evening. The event will take place at the St. Volodymyr Cultural Centre on Saturday (Feb. 23). It starts at 6:30 p.m. Garneau will give the keynote address at the gala. He was the first Canadian in outer space having flown with NASA three times. Throughout his career, he's been an officer in the Canadian Navy, president of the Canadian Space Agency, chancellor of Carleton University, a member of Parliament and continues to be a youth advocate. The black tie-optional evening will have a theme of Engaging Canada's Youth. It will include speeches by the finalists of the Liberal association's Youth Speech Writing Contest. The finalists are Elise Lum-You, 16, and Chelsea Liu, 16, both students at Abbey Park High School, and Alexandra McKeen, 18, a first-year student at the University of Toronto. The winners will be decided by Garneau, who is a contender for the Liberal Party of Canada's leadership. The finalists will also get to meet Garneau.
