"We have a drill where the kids go four-on-four-on-four," said Dave Grace, who coaches the Titans' midget team with Anthony Pugliese. "They would go hard against each other. The kids would be working their tails off, shouting at each other, cheering for each other. Every practice, they would go at full tilt. They just love to compete." It turns out, when the Titans applied that same effort in games, they couldn't lose then either. Holy Trinity capped a perfect 10-0 season with a 38-22 victory over Georgetown's Christ the King Jaguars in Tuesday's Halton midget boys' basketball final. The win kickstarted a Holy Trinity sweep of the Halton boys' basketball titles as the juniors and seniors followed up with victories in their championship games. "A triple crown doesn't happen too often," Grace said. "It's nice to be a part of it and the boys are proud to be a part of it." It took a while for the Titans offence, which averaged a league-best 47 points per game, to get rolling, though. Midway through the opening quarter, neither team had recorded a point. Grace said both teams seemed to have trouble adjusting to the bigger gym and different sightlines at Sheridan College. A three-pointer by Patrick Garby seemed to settle the Titans, though they went into the half clinging to a narrow 12-10 advantage. The Titans continued to play stingy defence in the second half. Josh Bork and David Henein did a good job in shutting down the Jaguars' biggest player, Martin Peric, who was held to just four points. Holy Trinity finally broke through on the offensive end as well, led by Bork and Garby, who combined for 15 points of Trinity's 17 points in the third quarter. Bork finished the game with 10 points while Garby had a game-high 19. Garby also played a key role in Holy Trinity's 47-34 semifinal win over Corpus Christi the previous week. "His basketball ability has really started to shine in the last month," said Grace. "He's driving to the hoop with confidence and he's also a very good defender." The Titans also sported Halton's best defence -- surrendering just 26 points per game -- and holding the Jaguars to just six points in the final quarter allowed them to close out the win. "The message we gave them before the game was to play solid defence and make your layups and you will have a good opportunity to win," Grace said. "And in the second half, that's exactly what they did." team will be back Continued from page 24 MICHAEL IVANIN / SPECIAL TO OAKVILLE BEAVER SEE YA: Holy Trinity player Tomas Tabak heads to the basket while Christ the King's Martin Peric looks on during Tuesday's Halton midget boys' basketball final at Sheridan College. of the game," Cordeiro said. "It was no surprise to us. We practiced against it (before the final). There was no magic wand, there was no genie in the bottle. We were well prepared for what they were going to throw at us." Reding pulled within a couple points on several occasions but wasn't able to overtake the Titans, who always seemed to have an answer. Often, the answer came from Stevenson, who hit a couple three-pointers and was also a rebounding presence. "His skill set is there," Nacevicius "We didn't perform our said of the Grade 9 best. Jerome Mugambi Anthony Cordeiro added 11 points, Etinosa Egouvden scored eight and Evan Vannier had seven for the Titans. Christian David led the Royals with 18 points, and Payne Wood had 13. Cordeiro vowed Reding, which won all but one tournament it entered this season and defeated high-profile schools like Vanier, Monsignor Johnson, St. Marguerite d'Youville and Father Henry Carr, will be back next year. And the Royals will be wiser for the experience, he added. "We didn't perform to our best. And the other team did, and they deserve all the credit. I don't want -- Herb Garbutt to take anything away from their accomplishments. We're disappointed we lost, but there's no sense of the end of the world, a collapse, that we choked," he said. "We didn't win the championship, but we feel we're a championship team and that this group of kids will continue to compete with the best in the Slug Information: Lastman's Bad Boy province in the years to come.
