Childerhose was immediately placed on the organ waiting list and given status 2, rapidly deteriorating -- the highest priority. He was diagnosed with diffuse panbronchiolitis (DP) at the age of 25 and has been fighting the disease for the last 15 years. DP is a severe and rare disease that causes fluid to continually build up in the lungs, similar to cystic fibrosis, and is traditionally specific to men of Asian descent living in China. Childerhose, a Caucasian male living in Canada, was told by his doctors he was the only person in the country with DP, said Taylor. He says a lot was going through his mind when the news came on Jan. 29 that there was a set of viable lungs for him and that he was being taken to surgery. "There's just a smile on your face that won't go away... you're just thinking, `Wow, this is fantastic.'" When asked if he was scared before going into surgery, he quickly replied `no.' I knew that I didn't have a lot of time left, and the fact that those lungs were there and they were good -- I'm going to live, here's my new lease," Childerhose said. "You just always have to be positive, all of the time." Taylor, who Childerhose calls his "rock," said she couldn't put into words the feeling of having her husband back. "I've known Keith for six and half Carpet Cleaning Specialists Since 1952 years and I knew reasonably healthy and active Keith for about two of those years.
