Mirror, mirror Blades could still enjoy home ice in first round How the Oakville Blades fare on home ice this weekend will determine whether or not they will enjoy home-ice advantage in the opening round of the Ontario Junior Hockey League playoffs. The Blades need to earn five points in their final three games this weekend in order to overtake the North York Rangers for fourth place in the Southwest Conference. The top four teams in the conference will be awarded the extra home game in their bestof-seven first-round series. Oakville will host the Mississauga Chargers tonight (Friday), St. Michael's Buzzers tomorrow (Saturday) and Orangeville Flyers Sunday. All games will be played at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex, with tonight's and tomorrow's contests slated for 7:30 p.m. starts and Sunday's game to begin at 4:30 p.m. The Blades kept their hopes of a top-four finish alive with a 3-1 upset of the West Division-leading Buffalo Jr. Sabres Wednesday in Buffalo. Patrick Chore scored twice, Matt Alvaro also tallied and Spencer Bacon stopped 38 of 39 shots in net. The Blades could finish the season as high as second in the conference or as low as sixth. St. Michael's needs one point in its final two games to secure the No. 2 seed as the South Division winner, while the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots are also currently tied with the Blades but have one less game to play. North York (five points ahead of Oakville) has completed its regular-season schedule. 27 · Friday, February 22, 2013 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com ERIC RIEHL / OAKVILLE BEAVER / @HALTON_PHOTOG WHO'S THE FAIREST?: The Oakville Edge novice synchronized skating team performs its 'Mirror, Mirror' routine, inspired by the movie of the same name, during last weekend's Synchro Capers competition at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. The novices earned bronze to join the Edge senior and juvenile (gold), beginner 1 (silver) and elementary B (bronze) squads as medalists at the event. The Edge's beginner 2 and adult 3 teams finished fourth in their divisions, and the elementary A team was sixth. According to organizers, the number of competitors and spectators for Saturday's action set a record for one-day attendance of any event held at the complex.
