On Tuesday, Jan. 29, Childerhose underwent a sevenand-a-half hour surgery at Toronto General Hospital (TGH) -- approximately three weeks later, the 41-year-old Oakville man can walk without assistance for short distances, eat regular meals and talk at a normal pace. "I call this the bonus round. Every day now is an appreciation of every day I get to have... I truly appreciate the person who made the choice (to be an organ donor) and the family who supported that choice," Childerhose told the staff at the Beaver newsroom, while covering a pencilsized hole in his throat -- left after he was removed from the assistance of a ventilator; he says it will take about three more weeks to heal on its own. With a second chance at life, Childerhose now has breath, but no words to thank Toronto General Hospital, the person who donated their lungs and that person's family for agreeing to honour their loved one's wishes. Oakville Mayor Rob Burton hopes to seek a third term in office in the coming 2014 municipal election. Burton expressed his desire to run for re-election Thursday, during a presentation on the status of the town, which was hosted by the Oakville Chamber of Commerce at the Harbour Banquet & Conference Centre.
