QEPCCC new centre for COPD education By Chris Clay METROLAND MISSISSAUGA Halton and Peel residents suffering from a serious and chronic lung disease can now access an education program in the community and outside traditional healthcare facilities. The Breathe Better -- Live Better education program for those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is offered at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre in Oakville on Mondays, at the Milton Sports Centre Wednesdays and at River Grove Community Centre and Huron Park Recreation Centre in Mississauga on Tuesdays and Thursdays, respectively. COPD is a long-term lung disease, often caused by smoking, and causes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It's the fourth leading cause of death among Canadians, with 780,000 people in Ontario living with the disease. The program will provide residents with information on how to prevent and manage the condition. "I have a phobia about hospitals and medical clinics, so accessing this education program at my local community centre has been a big help," said program participant Glenn Hayes. life is improving every day." Breathe Better -- Live Better is provided by the Mississauga Halton Local Health Integration Network in partnership with GlaxoSmithKline, Trillium Health Partners, Halton Healthcare Services, the City of Mississauga and the towns of Milton and Oakville. Ron Haines, Mississauga Halton LHIN vice-chair, said it will let patients receive services closer to home and get tips on healthy habits to decrease and delay the need for healthcare treatment, like hospitalization. Mississauga's Dr. Milan Patel is a physician director and respirologist with Trillium Health Partners. While lauding government decisions to ban smoking on municipal properties and outdoor child play areas and work to stop contraband cigarettes, he noted COPD can be also be caused by factors, such as poor air quality. He lauded the program, saying its "true strength" is that it's locally based. According to the Ontario Lung Association, every day an average of 150 new cases of COPD are diagnosed across the province. The disease cost the Ontario healthcare system $3.3 billion in 2011. 7 · Wednesday, February 27, 2013 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com PHOTOS BY CHRIS CLAY / METROLAND MISSISSAUGA breathe better: Dr. Milan Patel, physician director and respirologist with Trillium Health Partners, left, speaks at a press conference in Mississauga last week about the Breathe Better program.
