The BIA just found out it would not receive funding from the Town of Oakville to stage the July 1 event. The Town has contributed significant funding to the · AVALON · TUNDRA · TACOMA · MATRIX · RAV4 · FJ CRUISER · HIGHLANDER · COROLLA · AVALON · TUNDRA · TACOMA · MATRIX · RAV4 · AVALON · TUNDR Bronte BIA's Canada Day celebration over the past four years with $30,000 contributed in 2009, $30,000 in 2010, $25,000 in 2011 and $20,000 in 2012. "It's disappointing, but that's the way budgets are going these days," said Ralph Robinson, Ward 1 councillor and Bronte Village BIA Board of Management member. "We have to keep looking for ways to bring the tax rate down and we've been cutting budgets every place we had the opportunity." Robinson said he was surprised to learn no money was coming at all this year, stating he had the understanding the Canada Day funding would gradually reduce by $5,000 each year until it was gone. Oakville Mayor Rob Burton said the funding withdrawal had been discussed earlier in the fall and said the BIA is in a position to handle its affairs. · AVALON · TUNDRA · TACOMA · MATRIX · RAV4 · FJ CRUISER · HIGHLANDER · COROLLA · AVALON · TUNDRA · TACOMA · MATRIX · RAV4 · AVALON · TUNDR · AVALON · TUNDRA · TACOMA · MATRIX · RAV4 · FJ CRUISER · HIGHLANDER INTRODUCING THE ALL NEW 4TH GENERATION AND MIKE "PINBALL" CLEMONS AT OAKVILLE TOYOTA 2013 RAV 4 LE FWD 2013 RAV 4. "They asked us to help four years ago at a crucial point and we did, but only on the understanding that it was not to be permanent," said Burton in an e-mail. "Council and I are very pleased with the way the Bronte BIA and its Canada Day celebration has developed, and when we did the Town budget last year, we felt they had gotten to the point where we could step back and let them fly on their own." The federal government has come through with funding assistance for the BIA's Canada Day celebration in the past with the contribution growing from $15,000 in 2009 to $25,000 in 2012. At this time, it is unclear how much, if any, funding the government of Canada will be chipping in this year. Oakville MP Terence Young said the Town's withdrawal may make it more difficult for him to get federal money for the celebration. "The federal government funds thousands of these oakville BEAVER FILE PHOTO fireworks: Canada Day 2012 fireworks in Bronte. events across Canada for Canada Day. The event has to have good financial reporting, which the event has always had, but they also have to show in kind contributions from others," said Young. "When the Bronte BIA comes to the federal govern- ment and says, `We got $25,000 from the Town,' What that shows is that there is broad support in the community for the event. It shows the community-at-large values this event. There is a review system and that event would get more points. If the Town pulls out the funding, that is an indicator the community doesn't support the event and it will be harder for me to get the funding this year." Bronte BIA Executive Director Ann Sargent said prior to 2009, the cost of Oakville's Canada Day was borne solely by the 200 merchants of the Bronte BIA. As the event became larger and more successful, drawing larger and larger crowds, Sargent said, costs escalated for programming and for Town services such as road closures, police, fire and safety. Not wishing to have its merchants bear the brunt of these costs, the BIA submitted proposals for outside support.
