N E E D F O R S P E E D Three Oakville players competing in CIS basketball finals this weekend After a narrow 72-69 loss to the Carleton Ravens in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) final, Mike L 'Africain and the Ottawa GeeGees hope to beat their cross-town rivals when it matters most. Carleton will be the No. 1 seed for the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) basketball championships, while Ottawa is seeded third. Ottawa was 15-5 this season, with two of those losses against 19-1 Carleton -- 63-58 and a 111-107 triple overtime loss in the regular season finalé. L 'Africain, last year's OUA East rookie of the year, averaged 7.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.0 steals for the GeeGees. The 6-foot-1 point guard's 3.4 assists per game ranked 11th in the OUA. He also shot 91.0 per cent from the free throw line. The Loyola grad is one of three Oakville players who will be vying for the CIS title when the eight-team tournament begins in Ottawa tomorrow (Friday). Ryan Thomson of the seventhranked Lakehead Thunderwolves was a member of the OUA first allstar team this year after averaging 14.4 points and 4.6 rebounds. The 6-foot-7 forward, who played for St. Thomas Aquinas in high school, also averaged 2.0 assists and shot 43.6 per cent from three-point range. Lakehead went 14-7 this season and won the OUA bronze medal. Chris McLaughlin has been turning in some impressive playoff performances for the No. 8 University of Victoria. He had 21 points, six rebounds and four steals in the Vikes' 72-69 loss to the University of British Columbia in the Canada West final. In a semifinal win over Winnipeg, the former Abbey Park student had 23 points and 15 rebounds. McLaughlin averaged 11.9 points this year. The 6-foot-10 third-year post player was among the top-10 in the league in rebounds (8.3), blocks (1.2) and field-goal percentage (52.9).
