Annual egg hunt benefits National Service Dogs It's time again to find the leash and head off to the park to stretch those searching skills as the annual Oakville Easter Egg Hunt for Dogs returns on Good Friday (March 29). The fundraising event benefits National Service Dogs (NSD), a non-profit charity that works to increase the quality of life and independence of children and families living with special needs. As an Oakville tradition, the day includes a hunt for treat-filled eggs and prize giveaways, as well NSD, its clients, volunteers and dogs will teach event-goers more about autism and the benefits of certified service dogs. One in 100 children are diagnosed with autism, a developmental disability typically appearing during the first two-three years of a child's life, according to an NSD press release. Individuals with autism have difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, sensory behaviour and leisure or play activities. According to the NSD, trained and certified autism service dogs can: · Increase safety and alleviate the bolting behaviours common in children who have autism by acting as an anchor when tethered to the child · Improve a child's behaviour and socialization skills by acting as a constant companion and ambassador for the child · Create freedom for the child and family members to leave home and travel · Expand a child's capabilities to experience a better quality of life · Suppress behavioural outbursts in children, giving them an increased attention span and a greater aptitude for learning · Reduce stress and reliance on medications for family members The hunt will be held at Bronte Creek Provincial Park, 1219 Burloak Dr. Registration for the event opens at 10 a.m., followed by the hunt at 11 a.m. -- cost to register is $25 per family. NSD receives no government funding and relies on the support from corporate sponsors, local community members, service clubs and annual fundraisers, such as the Easter Egg Hunt for Dogs.
