Oakville defeated the Dofasco Steelhawks 3-1 in the championship game of the Dofasco Select Tournament. Patrick Dubreuil, John-Wesley Appleton and Connor Calvert tallied for the Gladiators, and goaltender Jackson Roode limited the opposition to one goal or less for the fifth straight time in the tournament. Previously in the competition, Oakville defeated the Ancaster Avalanche 2-1, Mountain Blues 3-1, Brantford 99ers 5-1 and Burlington Bulldogs 5-1. Samuel Armstrong netted a hat trick in the victory over Burlington, and Gabriel Vincent tallied twice against the Mountain Blues. Adam Rostom, Cole Webster, Zachary Lazenkas and Brendan McKerrow also scored goals for Oakville in the tournament. Also contributing to the win were Aidan Fishwick, Michael Bowman, Evan Smyth, Ben Spence and Lance Lusterio. The Gladiators, sponsored by Samuel, Son & Co., are coached by Alain Armstrong, Robert Lazenkas and Paul Dwyer. Jason Calvert and Nicole McKerrow serve as the team's trainers. His reasons were the same on the basketball side. Andrews saw an opportunity to play right away, and he did, starting 31 of 32 games over his first two seasons. Ironically, this year, the league MVP did not start a single game, though he did average 25 minutes per outing. Gilpin kept Andrews on the bench for the first few minutes to protect him from getting into early foul trouble in the season opener. When the plan worked, the coach stuck with it for the rest of the season. It would be hard to argue with the results. The Gaiters then topped Concordia in the semfinals and looked to be headed for the national championship tournament as they built a 42-28 lead on McGill in the final. McGill stormed back in the second half but Bishop's still led by four with under two minutes to play. The Martlets would close on a 7-0 run to win 77-74 after a three-point attempt by the Gaiters missed in the final seconds. With just one graduating senior, Bishop's should once again be a contender for the league title. And having met all his personal goals, leading Bishop's to the national tournament will top sit atop Andrews' list. "To lose a game like that, one you know you should have had, it's about how you come back from it," Andrews said. "It fuels the engine for next year."
