www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, March 28, 2013 | 8 We all have strength to overcome our pain continued from p.1 who toured and recorded music with Live On Arrival for a number of years before this opportunity arose. Since he began, Nash has shared his story and message with more than 820,000 students across Canada. "The exciting part is we spend three days a month in youth prisons and detention centres. We teach kids guitars, drums and we write songs with them," said Nash. After a recent show, one young fan handed the band a suicide note, Nash said, explaining she was going to harm herself, but changed her mind after watching him perform. As recent as this month, 84 students had given the band their suicide notes after the shows. "I can't tell you how many people on Facebook, Twitter (or) Instagram have taken pictures of their suicide notes when they got home. They ripped them up and took a picture of that," said Nash. The most extreme thing they've seen, Nash said, is the number of teens who have handed them blades. "There have been moments in my life where I was just sitting and something just clicked. We're trying to provide one of those a-ha moments for these kids," said Nash. Another story he shared with the audience involved a threeyear-old girl and her mother outside a British Columbia school. They were struck and killed by a car driven by a student who skipped Nash's performance with his two friends to drink and do drugs in the parking lot. "They're in jail for vehicular manslaughter. When you talk to them, they don't care about the fact they're in jail. They care about the memory of that three-year-old girl because you can't erase it," said Nash. "If I thought everyone had to hit rock bottom and see a tragedy to learn a lesson, I would stop our tour right now." The singer classifies his band's genre of music as poprock and every song is a story about "tragedy turning into victory." "Everybody is dealing with different things in this world. It's amazing to me the consistency of the issues from school-to-school, city-to-city and province-to-province," said Nash. Before Nash played the song One Last Breath, he recalled being terrified to fall asleep for a year after his accident because he had a recurring nightmare. "My nightmare was watching my own funeral. Nobody showed up and nobody cared that I lived or I died. In this Saturday Only, March 30th! For those who missed his performance, Nash offered advice for dealing with tough times and anguish. "Pain does not go away, but neither does the strength. When your pain is a 15, your strength is a 20. The strength you need to get through your tragedies is already inside of you," said Nash. "I went through something tough and I found the strength within. It's OK to get help. It's OK to talk about it. It's OK to be vulnerable."
