Women as Career Coaches event a success, men's event April 18 Halton's culture of mentorship was recently spotlighted at the ninth annual Women as Career Coaches (WACC) event. More than 650 female adults and students were at the Halton Industry Education Council (HIEC)hosted event, held at the Burlington Convention Centre on March 27. Television host and news anchor Pooja Handa returned as the night's emcee, along with coemcee and spotlight speaker Tamara Lopez, TVCogeco host and recent recipient of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal for her work with Canadian Border Services. "Tamara provided the women in attendance with a real-world mentorship success story, detailing how, following a meeting at last year's WACC, Pooja has served as a mentor to Tamara, helping her explore a career in broadcasting," stated a press release. Participants at the event also heard from three other spotlight speakers, including: Maria Locker, founder of Mompreneur Showcase Group Inc.; Erin Fast, owner of Fast Cleaning Services; and Priscilla Ladouceur, architect and part-owner of Hossack and Associates Architects. Those in attendance also shared stories, compared generational experiences and served to inspire other women. The evening wrapped up with a Q&A panel with the speakers and ranged in topic from life-work balance and finding your passion to overcoming life's challenges. "Students left feeling energized by the speakers and the night's key message of `Just because you wander, doesn't mean you're lost'," stated the release. Men as Career Coaches (MACC) -- a companion event that focuses on the local male population -- will also be held at the Burlington Convention Centre Thursday, April 18. Registration is still open online at www. hiec.on.ca/macc. Thanks to an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant, HIEC will also be launching a new project called Career Coaches Unlimited, which will focus on sector-specific mentorship. Earlier this year, HIEC issued its annual community challenge to raise $30,000 for mentorship initiatives -- to date, more than $16,000 has been raised.
