The students in Marianne Delija's class took up a social action challenge as a We School initiative after participating in a We Day event in Toronto at the beginning of the school year. Now, months later, the students have collected hundreds of dollars, soap and toiletries, Christmas gifts, shoes and much more for a number of charities. And, they're work is not yet finished. "Last year was my first experience doing this," said Delija. "I told this class, `You guys have a lot to live up to because I was blown away with last year.' And, they're better." KNAR OAKVILLE:Layout 1 4/9/13 10:06 Delija, who has been teaching at Holy Family for seven years, signed her class up for We School, something she intends on doing again in the future. As part of the initiative, Delija was able to take 15 of her students to We Day -- the students were selected for having the top social action proposals. We Day is organized by Marc and Craig Kielburger, founders of Free the Children. Delija said she likes the We Day challenge for her class because the Kielburgers don't pressure students into doing actions that benefit Free the Children. "It's about choosing your passion, whatever you're into, because if you're not into it you're not going to do a good job. That's what's great about this," she said. "The students came up with social action projects based on their passions. Say they like sports, one group did Right to Play because they're huge hockey fans and they're huge hockey players.
