"As soon as we mention we're raising money for the cause people want to get involved. "Even on flights, we've mentioned to our other colleagues that we're on a team and we're raising money and people just opened their wallets to us. I find the response is wonderful. There's a real support to the cause." This year's event will start at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 31 and wraps up on Saturday, June 1 at 7 a.m. Those interested in participating or supporting the cause can register for the relay online at www.relayforlife. ca/oakville or by phone at 905-8455231. Each relay event has included a survivor's victory lap, a fight-back ceremony and a luminary ceremony -- the latter is held at dusk to honour cancer survivors and remember loved ones who've lost their battle with the devastating disease. For Friends To The End, this year the event will be extra emotional, says Gaudry. They'll be walking for a teammate who joined them last year to honour her parents who had cancer, but has, since then, been diagnosed with the disease herself. "She's currently going through chemo and we hope she will be well enough to join us... so for us it's one more reason for us to relay hard this year," she said. As for Gaudry, she said personally, she joined the team because she had lost a close friend to brain cancer. "I wanted to honour his fight and all the support he got from the cancer society. I was surprised that he always had rides to and from his treatment. There was always someone there for him," she said. "For me, it was very special to see all of these volunteers coming together for him. So I decided to join so that I could honour all these people who work so hard," Gaudry said.
