New hospital topped off by Nathan Howes Special to the Beaver 27 | Thursday, April 18, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Construction of the new Oakville hospital has reached the top. To mark it, a near-30-foot steel beam was signed by Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) officials and local dignitaries on site Tuesday. The beam is part of the ambulatory care building. "It's amazing how fast time flies. It seems (like) yesterday we had the groundbreaking. Even with the cement pouring, it seems like yesterday, yet here we are with the topping off ceremony," said John Oliver, HHS president and CEO. Oliver said topping off is a very significant construction milestone. It marks the end of the concrete pouring and the start of the retrofitting and eventual completion. "The whole community is watching this place go up. The community is very interested in it. We've been arranging tours (for those who want to see it)," said Oliver. The estimated 1.6 million square-foot hospital is on schedule for substantial completion by summer 2015, with an opening targeted for December 2015. Since construction began, more than 73,000 cubic metres of concrete has been poured into see New on p.30 The Regional Municipality of Halton Oakville Mayor Rob Burton, MPP Kevin Flynn, and officials from Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) and the Oakville Hospital Foundation were at the new hospital Tuesday to celebrate the topping off of the building and celebrate "the highest point of construction" for the new hospital.
