Halton Police Deputy Chief Andrew Fletcher said during a four-month period police traced in excess of $2 million worth of allegedly fraudulent DVD sales generated online. Police traced companies and websites and on April 29, police executed search warrants at five locations -- two in Toronto, two in Oakville and one in Burlington. Three arrests followed. At 2530 Speers Rd., investigators seized an abundance of equipment, 13,000 allegedly counterfeit DVDs and $19,000 in cash. Police also seized luxury vehicles and worked with Canada Post to intercept hundreds of packaged DVDs destined for shipment worldwide. Halton police displayed more than 20 DVD burners (each capable of burning 10 DVDs at a time), hundreds of allegedly counterfeit DVDs, seized shipping packages, and thousands of dollars in Canadian currency during a press conference on Tuesday in Oakville. Movie piracy has hefty price tag photo by Nikki Wesley Oakville Beaver (Follow on Twitter @halton_photog) Some of the television show DVDs displayed included Dallas, Law and Order, Happy Days, Batman and 90210. Det.-Sgt. John Mans of the regional fraud unit alleged the suspects had recorded the shows off a television station with the station's logo still faintly visible. He also said multiple people were working for the suspects at the warehouse who were unaware they were doing anything wrong. "Investigators are hopeful these arrests will have a significant impact on the counterfeit industry," said Fletcher. "We continue to caution the public `Buyer Beware.' Ensure you are an informed consumer and be cautious when you are making purchases online from a site you are not familiar with or that seems to be offering something very rare or hard to find. Make an effort to educate yourself about the seller and their company prior to purchasing and like my mother always said, `If something sounds too good to be true it probably is.'" Colin Wood, 33, of Oakville, Martin Juchniewicz, 33, of Toronto, and Nicholas Rogers, 46, of Burlington have each been charged with defrauding the public, passing off, laundering proceeds of crime, possession of proceeds of crime, and participating in a criminal organization. The Motion Picture Association of Canada said movie piracy is far from harmless costing the Canadian economy $1.8 billion and 12,600 fulltime equivalent jobs in 2009 and 2010.
