EAST PLAINS UNITED CHURCH opens Campaign for $100,00 [sic] Building Fund, Oct. 27 The oldest church on the Plains of Aldershot is undertaking a building expansion program in order to provide much needed accomodation for a fast growing suburban community. East Plains United Church, situated on No. 2 Highway west of Maplehurst School, goes back nearly a century and a quarter in history. Sunday School was originally held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Emory, whose descendants are active in the congregation today. In 1843 land was donated for a church and a cemetery and the first church, a small small frame building was erected in 1858. from the files of the Hamilton Spectator, March 12, 1892, it was learned that the first brick church was built in that year. 50 by 54 feet, with a seating capacity of 250 and at a cost of $4,500. The building was destroyed by fire and the present one erected in 1907. For nearly 50 years families have worshipped and served the community in the present structure, which is no longer adequate for the rapidly growing community. A building extension program has been gathering momentum for three years and had now reached the climax in a financial objective of $100,000. An every person canvass will be undertaken to underwrite this amount by the men of the congregation with Burton Crocker, finance chairman, and Emory Horn, building treasurer. All members, adherents and friends are asked to reserve Tuesday evening, November 2, when they will be called on. In addition 80 men who will canvass will meet on Monday evening, November 1.
